AWI Students - Stanton Gloves (Gen 1 and Gen 2)

WHICH GENERATION DO YOU HAVE? Look at the side of the glove. Gen 1 has a METAL D-RING on the side. Gen 2 has NO metal at all (a leather loop at the wrist instead). If the box is not marked, check the pair you were handed and pick that generation below. Gen 2 fits true to size. Gen 1 runs tight - size up if you are between sizes.

The Stanton Gen 2 is what happened after we shipped Gen 1 and then called our customers. Not a survey. Actual phone calls, from Matt, to as many buyers as would pick up. A welding student in Wisconsin managed to break through Gen 1's leather in 12 days and its lining in a month, which nobody had done before, and feedback like that is exactly what a second generation is for.

Three things changed, all of them straight from that feedback.

The sizing is fixed. Gen 1 ran tight on purpose, and plenty of you told us it was too much of a purpose. So we shifted the entire size run up: a Gen 2 Medium is the same physical glove Gen 1 sold as a Large, and it fits a medium hand the way a medium should. What was an XL is now a Large, and so on down the line. Measure against the sizing chart and order your true size. If you wore Gen 1 and had sized up to make it work, your normal size fits now.

The metal is gone. Gen 1 had a metal D-ring on the side of the glove. Gen 2 replaces it with a leather loop at the base of the gauntlet, on the wrist side. It still hangs from a hook or clips to a carabiner, but there's no metal left on the glove to catch on stock, scratch a finished surface, or sit there conducting heat.

More padding exactly where gloves die. Our wear data kept pointing at the same zones: the fingertips, and the stretch from the thumb crotch up to the tip of the thumb. Gen 2 adds padding on every fingertip and a padded run between the thumb and forefinger, all the way up. You give up a little dexterity — we won't pretend otherwise — and in exchange there's a lot more glove between you and the work in the exact places Gen 1 wore through first.

What carries over is the recipe that made Gen 1 work. A sueded nubuck shell cut from top-grain cowhide, 0.9 to 1.0mm thick, treated against water and oil. A soft cotton lining for comfort and breathability. Kevlar® thread at every seam, in black or gold. Gunn cut fingers with flat no-rub seams, an extended gauntlet over the forearm, and an elasticated palm-side cuff that holds on while you work but lets the glove fly off when it has to.

These are heavy duty welding gloves for stick, MIG, and TIG, and they hold up to forging and grinding too.
